Pussy Riot & Saatchi Want You To Experience a Russian Prison
The notorious Russian feminist protest punk rock group Pussy Riot has announced that they will be launching an 8-week immersive theater production called ‘Inside Pussy Riot’ to London’s Saatchi Gallery in November. The experience, crafted in collaboration with award winning London theatre group Les Enfants Terribles, will give visitors an opportunity to have the first-hand experience of life inside a Russian prison, informed by the true experience endured by Pussy Riot after their infamous performance of anti-Putin punk in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in 2012.
Lead member of the guerilla group Nadya Tolokonnikova will be taking part in a selection of the shows, guiding participants through her own ordeal, including a recreation of “Russian courtrooms, real Russian labour colony, solitary confinement cells, priests who shout about banning abortions and many more absurd, but real-life things that exist in Russia today.” The theatre project is a chance to promote the group’s activism, allowing the audience to engage in the reality of the widespread human rights abuse in one of the world’s largest economies.
Pussy Riot has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund this project in order to make it as true to form as possible, and so far have raised nearly £8000 of their £60,000 goal. All supporters will be rewarded with some Pussy Riot gear including t-shirts, limited edition prints and the promise to send a so-called ‘friendly’ personalised postcard to Vladimir Putin ahead of his electoral campaign next year…
