Irvine Welsh pens new tv show around 80s Ibiza Club Scene
You all know it was going to happen at some point. Irvine Welsh, the mind behind cult favourite Trainspotting, has taken on the clubbing world once again, this time, his focus is on the balearic paradise of Ibiza. In his first TV project, Welsh brings us Ibiza87, following London DJs Danny Rampling, Paul Oakenfold, Nicky Holloway and Johnny Walker on their first trip to Ibiza, which marked the beginning of acid house and the second Summer of Love.
In true Welsh fashion, this series promises to include a whole lot of sex, drugs and violence, and of course all the partying – ‘Ibiza87 chronicles the rollercoaster highs and lows, the drug-fuelled excess and the untold riches through to the rivalries, violence and arrests of an incredible period of British music culture.’
Speaking on the opportunity to explore this Welsh says, “Those beats, pills, and travels (whether to the other side of the world or across the town) shaped a generation, and the opportunity to construct a drama within this background was a dream come true.”
Expect a suitably amazing soundtrack curated and compiled for the series by Rampling, Oakenfold and Holloway, of course.
Although no release date has been set for the series at this point, 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of the team’s original trip the White Island. At a time when the British clubbing scene is in desperate need of reinvigoration, what better way to celebrate its foundations?
