Luc Besson’s Anticipated Valerian With Rihanna Gets Release Date

Luc Besson, the director behind films such as The Big Blue and Lucy has announced a release date for his forthcoming sci-fi thriller Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

Starring Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevigne, Rihanna (this will be the first major feature role) and Clive Owen, this is set to be one ensemble cast not to be missed.

Valerian was created by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières in 1967 and ran for 43 years in anthology magazine Pilote. In what sounds like a little bit of a lift from Star Wars the film is based on the attack of a great, historic, city by an unknown enemy. Valerian and Laureline must race against time to find the source of this evil and stop it before it destroys the cornerstone of our universe.

Besson said of the film, “I wanted to make this film years ago but I had to wait for the technology to catch up with my imagination. When I saw Avatar that’s when everything changed for me. I knew from that moment on the possibilities were limitless.”

“Jean-Claude Mézières, who is the creator of Valerian, worked with me on The Fifth Element, and he was asking me all the time, ‘Why don’t you make Valerian?’ and I always said ‘ I can’t. There are only 10 or 12 human characters in the comic series. Everyone else is an alien.”
