Pantone Gets Spiritual Announcing Ultra Violet As Colour Of 2018
Renowned color-matching company Pantone has chosen Ultra Violet as their colour of 2018, or 18-3838 as it’s known by industry insiders. A colour usually associated with the wellness and spiritual community, Pantone has chosen it for its “mysterious and contemplative” properties as well as its “ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us to the future.”
The announcement of Pantone’s colour of the year is the one day on the calendar where the fashion, style and design community gather around to anticipate how new trends will emerge and build themselves around the colour. In 2015 it was Marsala, Rose Quartz and Serenity in 2016 and Greenery in 2017. The title has been running since the year 2000 and since then has gradually become somewhat of an annual celebration of colour and forthcoming trends.
How the actual colour is chosen remains somewhat of a mystery but it is filtered through current trends in entertainment, film, fashion, design, travel and lifestyle, as well as social and political conditions. We do know that “the international color guru” and Pantone Colour Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman chooses the colour every year and has done since its inception. In an interview from 2014 Pantone said of how they deliver the decision in shrouded secrecy, “We deliver the news in a sealed envelope, and we have our representatives go out to [partner companies] in their trench coats with their suitcases.”
Eiseman said of the decision: “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination, from exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way for what is yet to come.” Expect high street outlets to paint the town purple in 2018.
