Snapchat Launch 3D Lenses

The social feature wars are heating up. Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, have all implemented some form of short life stories or other features to woo its users. Now Snapchat whom are constantly on the search for improvements to set them apart from the rest, the $28 billion social network is introducing another dimension to its app with 3D lenses.

‘New World Lenses’, as they are to be called, will allow Snapchat users to experience AR technology such as the augmented reality that went viral in Pokémon Go last year. These lenses, as opposed to the cute deer faces and rainbow vomit that we know and love, will apply to the real world, when using the rear-facing camera.

The lenses are spatially aware so vary depending on the scene depicted, for example planting AR flowers in the ground or placing an AR rainbow in the sky.

This leap forward in the app’s technology reflects the wishes of Snapchat’s parent company Snap to identify it as a ‘camera company’ rather than merely an app or social network, ‘In the way that the flashing cursor became the starting point for most products on desktop computers, we believe that the camera screen will be the starting point for most products on smartphones’.

No doubt this new feature will cause huge excitement from Snapchat users, who will be thrilled to know that the lenses will be updated daily, meaning the fun never stops…
