Watch First Peek At Scarlett Johanssen In Ghost In The Shell

The anticipation has been building for a while but finally the trailer for the live-action adaptation of the classic manga and anime series Ghost in the Shell has arrived, and it does not disappoint. It’s as exquisite as we had imagined. The film enlists superstar actress Scarlett Johansson for the title role of The Major, a soldier with a human mind inside an android body. With what looks like highly detailed styling and cinematography, the film looks to align itself as closely to the original series as possible.

From Playlist:

“GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.”

The casting of Scarlett Johansson raised a lot of eyebrows back in 2013 when there were accusations of whitewashing and cultural appropriation in the film. But producer Steven Paul defended the decision by responding that the team wanted the film to take a more international approach.
The film is supported by an impressive international ensemble which includes Juliette Binoche, Takeshi Kitano, and Pilou Asbaek, with cameos by musician Tricky who was in the epic sci-fi film Fifth Element.

Ghost In The Shell started originally back in 1989 by Masamune Shirow as a manga series but enjoyed considerable international success, praised for the ways in which it offered many observations on present day and future philosophy.

Savour the incredible trailer because the film is not out until March 31st, 2017.
